Shams: Former Celtics guard Carsen Edwards inks 2-year deal with Detroit Pistons

Boston Celtics alumnus Carsen Edwards is signing a two-year deal with the Detroit Pistons according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The former No. 33 overall pick of the Celtics picked up by the team out of the Purdue Boilermakers’ basketball program in the 2019 NBA draft, Edwards struggled in more of a microwave bench scorer role on a deep Celtics roster.

Needing more of a runway to be an effective player, he never quite found his rhythm in a reduced role and was cut by the Memphis Grizzlies after he was dealt there by the Celtics near the end of the 2021 NBA offseason. The Texan guard was picked up by the Salt Lake City Stars (the developmental affiliate of the Utah Jazz at the G League level) a little over a month later.

There, according to Charania, “Edwards averaged nearly 27 points per game” in the 2021-22 G League season. Playing for a Pistons franchise with little likelihood of considerable postseason play in the near-term future, Edwards should get more of the run he will need to be successful.
