Shamrock Rovers striker Aaron Greene tests positive for Covid-19 after displaying symptoms

Aaron Greene has tested positive for Covid-19 and Shamrock Rovers’ potential league decider against Derry City tomorrow is in the balance.

Striker Greene started to display symptoms of the virus on Monday and was tested.

A tense wait ensued and the Hoops received confirmation of a positive result which they confirmed today.

It follows news that playmaker Jack Byrne - named by Rovers today - tested positive for Covid while on international duty with Ireland last week.

Rovers officials have supplied the Health Service Executive (HSE) with details of Greene’s movements this week.

But they are awaiting confirmation back from the HSE on how many team-mates are deemed close contacts.

That in turn will determine if Rovers have sufficient numbers to press ahead with tomorrow’s televised game at Tallaght Stadium.

If Bohemians fail to win in Dundalk in the 5.45pm game, Rovers will be champions if they beat Derry a few hours later.

If arch rivals Bohs get three points at Oriel Park, the title race rolls into Monday - when Rovers travel to Finn Harps - regardless of what happens in Tallaght.

But if team-mates of the positive case are deemed close contacts, Rovers could yet be facing 14-days of isolation with all games on hold.

That matter is now with the league.

St Pat’s matches were recently cancelled for two weeks after a player tested-positive. His team-mates who shared the bus to Cork had to be tested and restrict their movement.

Galway United then confirmed two cases in their squad and had two league matches postponed. The squad and staff were tested and told to restrict their movement.

Last Saturday, the FAI announced that the league season was being extended by a week to allow for the rescheduling of Covid-hit games.
