Shamrock Rovers star Joey O'Brien thinks Hoops are still in the title race

Joey O'Brien insists Shamrock Rovers are still in the title race.

The former Ireland international had Europe on the brain this week after the Hoops came from behind to stun Apollon Limassol 2-1 on Thursday.

But they face Cork City at Turner’s Cross tomorrow before flying to Cyprus on Monday ahead of Thursday's Europa League second-leg.

Having played a game more, Rovers are five-points behind Dundalk who face St Pat’s away this evening, but O’Brien insists the title race is wide open.

“Our aim is to win in Cork and we’ve not backed away from that,” he said.

“We’ve a good squad because the manager has brought in serious players, so I’m sure he’s going to rotate.

“But we’re going to Cork to win. We’ve played well this season. Some results have been disappointing, like Sligo (0-0) at home.

"We absolutely battered them and it was a similar performance against UCD when we got the goals (7-0)

"It's going to be difficult down in Cork but as I said, we’re going there to win and hopefully we can."

O’Brien says confidence is sky high in the Rovers team following Thursday’s win and the victory over Norwegian side Brann last week.

“Apollon   scored a screamer but we kept our composure and kept playing our game. We looked dangerous in the game and really dangerous from set plays.”

Meanwhile, Sean McLoughlin completed his move to Hull City from Cork City yesterday.

The centre-back, 22, has penned a three-year deal with the Championship club and said: “I’m buzzing to be here.

“I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, but it’s a fantastic opportunity and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Rebels caretaker boss John Cotter said: “Sean has been brilliant for us. It just shows you what hard work and sacrifice does.”
