Shamrock Rovers star Jack Byrne speaks out on future amid Nottingham Forest link

In-demand Jack Byrne says he is not just looking at clubs in England for his next potential destination as the race to sign the Shamrock Rovers star intensifies.

Reports in Cyprus claimed Nottingham Forest and APOEL were both in the hunt to sign the midfielder who has produced a string of wonderful performances.

But Byrne says he has still not ruled out the option of staying at Shamrock, but it looks increasingly likely he will be lured away from Ireland with a number of clubs interested in his signature.

And in an interview with the Independent, it is not just clubs in England who are catching his eye.

“I am still not ruling out Shamrock Rovers. I have spoken to the club and the manager. I have told him that they will be in my mind when I am making the decision,” said Byrne.

“It just has to be the right club and the right challenge. One of the best years of my career was playing in Holland (on loan at Cambuur in 2015/16).

“I wouldn’t rule out going back there if something good became available.

"I’m not just looking towards England or Shamrock Rovers. There are a lot of things that I have to take into consideration and I will be over the next couple of weeks.”

Byrne is likely to spark a scramble for his signature with the midfielder free to leave Shamrock for nothing when his contract expires on December 31 meaning he will be a free agent.

The Cyprus Times claim Forest, Stoke City and Preston North End are all keen on Byrne but it is claimed that Mick McCarthy, who handed Byrne his Ireland international debut,  and who is now in charge of APOEL is in pole position to sign the 24-year-old.

The former Manchester City youngster will have a holiday before deciding on his future and is also said to have options in Belgium.
