Shamrock Rovers members approve sale of 25% stake in club to billionaire Dermot Desmond

Shamrock Rovers' members have voted in favour of handing over a 25% stake in the club to Celtic's majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

The billionaire businessman is set to invest a cool €2 million in the club after the vote by members overwhelmingly approved the sale, according to RTE.

Members will maintain a 50% majority shareholding in the club, with Australia-based Ray Wilson holding the remaining 25%.

The 69-year-old's interest in Rovers was first reported last year.

The Hoops became a fully fan-owned club in 2005, but changed their model in 2016 to allow Rovers supporter Wilson come into the fold.

A deal is likely though to strengthen the relationship between Rovers and Celtic with the suggestion that the League of Ireland side could feed some of their young talent to the Scottish champions.

Damien Duff recently moved from coaching in Rovers' youth setup to become reserve coach at Parkhead before Brendan Rodgers' departure this weeks saw him promoted to new manager Neil Lennon's first-team coaching staff.
