Shamrock Rovers left heartbroken as they are dumped out of Europe

History made at Tallaght Stadium but it was made by the men in white and not in black and green as it was Flora Tallin who held their nerve.

Shamrock Rovers still pocket around €1m from their Euro adventure this summer.

But there was a prize worth three times that and more on the table for them last night and a place in Friday's European Conference League group stage draw.

Instead, all of it goes to the Estonians, who became the first Meistriliiga club to qualify for the group stages in a UEFA competition.

Granted, it would have taken one of the Irish sporting performances of the summer for the Hoops to have pulled it off, after last week conceding four goals in a European tie for the first time in a decade.

Further, they were looking to score two goals in as many games against a team that had secured 10 clean sheets from 17 domestic league outings.

The closest they came was when Aaron Greene couldn't quite get enough on Graham Burke's 22nd minute pull-back.

Eventually, Rovers were undone by a double-whammy of errors.

Firstly by Danny Mandroiu as he lost possession and then by Alan Mannus, who somehow let Rauno Sappinen's shot beat him in the 58th minute.

With 3,500 home supporters adding real volume to the occasion, this wasn't what Stephen Bradley had wanted for Liam Scales' swansong before his Celtic move.

Bradley had promised a patient approach but his side were swiftly on the front foot. Veteran European campaigner Ronan Finn fired high and wide after 58 seconds.

There was an early warning for the hosts, too, with the early concession of a free close to their own box and then a corner in the third minute when Hoare did well to cut out the danger posed by Sergei Jenov.

Still, Rovers settled quickly and enjoyed a purple patch as they passed accurately, and at pace, although their opponents did manage to keep their shot-making at a distance.

Greene flashed a speculative effort past the far post before Finn's good effort was parried away by Matvei Igonen, who had an easier task in denying Graham Burke moments later.

The Hoops' best effort of that period came when Burke got to the byline and Greene charged onto his colleague's pull-back, but just couldn't get enough on it to trouble the Flora keeper.

In response, Flora forced Alan Mannus into his first save when Sappinen out-paced the Rovers defence but couldn't beat the Northern Ireland international.

Cheekily, Mandroiu nutmegged Martin Miller to buy himself space for a rising shot aimed for the top corner that just flew over.

Not for the first time, the talented 22-year-old immediately winced as he held his side, having suffered an injury early on.

The loss of Sean Hoare to injury, causing the switch of Joey O'Brien to the left-sided centre-back role with Sean Gannon introduced, saw Rovers lose their rhythm.

Gannon made an almost immediate contribution, however, preventing Zenjov from scoring from close range, and subsequently O'Brien and Roberto Lopes were needed to get in crucial blocks as Flora ventured further forward.

Rovers needed the breather and came out firing again, with Scales becoming more influential.

Teed up by Greene, the 23-year-old didn't quite catch hold of an angled shot.

From the resulting corner, Lopes and O'Brien got headers in without threatening the goal.

But Flora struck moments later, pouncing on Mandroiu's mistake as he misplaced a pass to Gary O'Neill. Markus Soomets swept the ball quickly to Konstantin Vassiljev, who fed Sappinen.

His shot was right at Mannus yet somehow evaded the keeper as he dived. With 32 minutes remaining, Rovers needed something of a miracle.

Bradley instantly replaced Mandroiu with Richie Towell, who had started the first leg, and Towell saw a 78th minute volley saved that could have provided a lifeline.

But the game was up and, with it, the League's participation in Europe for another summer.
