Shamrock Rovers II get the go ahead for 2020 First Division season

Shamrock Rovers have received the go ahead from the FAI to field a second team in this year's First Division.

The National League Executive Committee gave a Rovers B team the thumbs up on Monday, despite the vocal opposition from First Division clubs who fear it would demean the league.

But the FAI have today ratified the committee's decision, allowing Rovers II to take over the spot vacated by Limerick for the 2020 season.

"Shamrock Rovers II have been accepted into the SSE Airtricity League First Division for the 2020 season," a short FAI statement read today.

"The National League Executive Committee approved the proposal and the decision was ratified by the FAI Board."

Rovers sent a B team into the First Division in 2014, after both Mervue United and Salthill devon withdrew from the league to make way for the reformed Galway.

A middling season saw them finished sixth out of eight, with the Hoops pulling the plug amid concerns over the financial viability of a second team.

They were replaced by Cabinteely.
