Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes gets Cape Verde call-up

Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes has been called into the Cape Verde squad.

The Dubliner qualifies through his father, Carlos, who comes from the Atlantic Ocean islands.

Lopes is in their squad for the upcoming friendlies against Togo on Thursday week and DR Congo three days later.

Lopes said: "I'm delighted to be a part of the squad and I'm looking forward to the experience."

Two years ago, Lopes was asked about playing international football with Cape Verde and said: "We tried to fish something out a while back but nothing really came of it.

"I had to send over some documents but I kind of let that ship sail and I'm focused on playing football here for Shamrock Rovers.

“But it would be brilliant. It’s not something I took seriously growing up but it would be nice to look into it."
