Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes called up to Cape Verde squad

Jack Byrne was the second Shamrock Rovers player to earn an international call-up today.

Watched by Ireland boss Stephen Kenny against AC Milan and Dundalk over the past few weeks, Hoops playmaker Byrne has hit form in recent weeks to earn a recall.

His club colleague Roberto Lopes has also caught the eye, particularly in Rovers' Europa League defeat to AC Milan in Tallaght.

And Lopes, 28, was named in the Cape Verde squad early this morning for two friendlies next month, against Guinea (October 10) and Andorra (October 7).

The Dubliner, who made his 100th appearance for the Hoops earlier this month, qualifies for Cape Verde through his father, Carlos, who hails from the Atlantic Ocean Islands.

Lopes made his international debut in a friendly against Togo in France last October - a 2-0 victory for his side.

Cape Verde was scheduled to face Andorra three days later but when that match was cancelled, Lopes and his new team-mates played French club side Marseille in a behind-closed-doors encounter.

Lopes wasn’t involved in African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cameroon and Mozambique after the FAI Cup final last year, but is included in a 26-man squad on this occasion.

Speaking to MirrorSport in July, the defender said: “I wasn't cleared by FIFA for competitive games at the time, but I think I am now.

“I'm eligible to play in the squad, it's just about being picked.

"It was one of my best experiences in football. It was out of the blue and fantastic to play the friendlies and be in a group with players from all over the world.

“I was totally out of my comfort zone, in terms of speaking a different language and being the odd one out really".
