Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians strengthen with new signings

Shamrock Rovers have swooped for ex-Ipswich defender Barry Cotter while Bohemians landed striker Cole Kiernan from Middlesbrough.

Right-back Cotter, 22, joined the Tractor Boys under Mick McCarthy and made four first-team appearances but didn’t feature last season.

His contract was due to expire this summer but he was allowed to leave in March, with League of Ireland champions Rovers now picking up the ex-Limerick FC man.

“We are delighted to sign Barry,” said Rovers boss Stephen Bradley. “He has many of the attributes we look for in a player and we look forward to working with him”.

Meanwhile, Bohs boss Keith Long believes their new recruit Kiernan has bags of potential.

The 19-year-old spent the last year with Middlesbrough’s Under-23 side and captained Sunderland’s Under-18s before that.

From Hartlepool, Kiernan is eligible for Ireland through his grandfather and has featured in Irish Under-18 squads in the past.

Gypsies boss Long said: “Cole comes to the club having been through the academy at Sunderland and more recently with Middlesbrough’s U23s.

“He will provide us with options up front and will add different qualities to help the team as we enter the last few months of the season.

“We are looking forward to working with him, and we hope that the potential he has can be realised with us in a new environment.”
