Shamrock Rovers ace Jack Byrne wins PFAI Player of the Year for second year running

Jack Byrne has been crowned PFAI ‘Player of the Year’ for the second year running.

The Shamrock Rovers and Republic of Ireland midfielder scooped the gong ahead of Hoops team-mate Roberto Lopes and Bohemians’ Danny Grant.

Byrne was the standout player in the truncated league season but couldn’t make it a double as Dundalk won the FAI Cup last weekend.

His future remains uncertain amid interest from Mick McCarthy’s Cypriot side APOEL, as well as a number of clubs in England and at least one in America.

Byrne is abroad on holidays and expects to make a decision on his future in the next few weeks.

Shamrock Rovers made him a ‘fantastic offer’ to stay, according to Hoops boss Stephen Bradley, but the league champions have a fight on their hands to retain him.

Gypsies star Grant is the winner of the PFAI ‘Young Player of the Year’ after an eye-catching season.

The winger helped Bohs to a second-placed finish in the league and beat team-mate Dawson Devoy and Shamrock Rovers’ Brandon Kavanagh to the award.

Grant is expected to leave the League of Ireland this winter as he pursues options in England with Hull City one of the clubs tracking him.

Mark Doyle won the PFAI First Division ‘Player of the Year’ after starring in Drogheda United’s promotion success.

Kavanagh was also shortlisted in that category after impressing for Shamrock Rovers II while UCD’s Yoyo Mahdy was the other player nominated.

Rovers boss Bradley and Drogheda United’s Tim Clancy won the Premier and First Division ‘Manager of the Year’ awards respectively.

On the international stage, Ireland star Matt Doherty lifted the Irish Overseas Player of the Year while Denise O’Sullivan was crowned International Women's Player of the Year.

And Neil Doyle and Alan Patchell were successful in the referees categories in the Premier and First Divisions respectively.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, the PFAI award winners were announced at a virtual ceremony held online today.
