Shamrock Rovers 4 Sligo Rovers 0: Hoops continue march towards glory with Tallaght rout

One down, two to go for the merciless green machine whose big wheels keep churning towards title glory.

Ronan Finn, Graham Burke, Jack Byrne and Dylan Watts all scored in another remarkable show of strength. But Byrne is now an injury concern for Ireland's Euro playoff with Slovakia next week after limping off with an injury late on.

Shamrock Rovers have bagged 17 goals in their last four league games and, keen to spread the wealth, with 10 different players on the scoresheet. The Hoops may have felt a little overshadowed by Dundalk this week, considering their headline grabbing exploits in Europe.

But there will be a determination around these parts to do some lasting damage of their own on the continent next season.

Barring a meltdown of epic proportions, Rovers are heading for the Champions League as they are two wins away from a first league title in nine years.

But depending on how Bohs - now 11 points behind - fare in their three outings before Rovers play again, the Hoops could wrap up the title in their next game.

That's against Derry City here in a fortnight as next week’s trip to Finn Harps will be postponed because of four international call-ups.

Ahead of this game, Hoops boss Stephen Bradley warned that Sligo Rovers were “one of the most dangerous teams you can play in the league”.

That maybe so, at least since the season resumed and Liam Buckley’s charges hauled themselves off the foot of the table and into mix for Europe.

But 'one of’ the most dangerous teams was ultimately no match for ‘the most’ dangerous team in the league and Rovers won in a canter.

Mind you, they were handed the lead in the 13th minute after a howler from goalkeeper Ed McGinty who was called up to the Irish U21 squad earlier in the day.

Finn’s shot, from an Aaron Greene ball, should have been gathered comfortably but McGinty inexplicably let it slip through his hands and trickle over the line.

That was all the incentive Rovers needed to drive home their advantage. Sligo were competitive and honest, but they were left in a spin trying to keep the Hoops in check.

With precision passing and lightning-quick speed of thought, the hosts were at a different level.

And Burke put them further ahead when stabbing home an outrageous Byrne assist from distance six minutes before the break.

McGinty atoned for his earlier error with a string of saves to keep out Aaron McEneff and Greene who then smashed the post soon after.

But it was curtains for Sligo Rovers on the hour.

Farrugia - a constant threat - exchanged slick passes with Burke down the left and he teed up Byrne who finished first time after ghosting into the box.

And merciless Rovers were not finished there.

With 12 minutes to go, subs Rhys Marshall - on a galloping run into space - and Watts combined and the latter applied a cool finish.

It took Rovers time to find their rhythm when the league resumed in late July, but they are cruising to the finish now.
