Shamima Begum 'self-confident' and walks 'elegantly', says body laguage expert

Former ISIS bride Shamima Begum has changed a lot since she quit Britain and travelled to Syria as a school girl back in 2015 - transforming from a "belligerent" teen to a "socially confident extrovert".

Currently being held at the al-Roj prison camp, she's still campaigning for the chance to return to the UK and insisted she was just a "dumb kid" who made a "mistake" when she ran off to join ISIS.

She made the comments in an interview with Andrew Drury for his film Danger Zone, and is seen looking very different wearing jeans and a Nike cap, as well as make-up and red nail varnish.

Now body language expert Judi James has examined the footage from Shamima's latest TV appearance and explained the changes are not just down to her make-up and Western clothes.

Judi said: "This is a very different version of Shamima Begum, who is almost unrecognisable from the belligerent and often dismissive-looking teenager from her earliest videos.

"Her posture is upright here and she walks with elegance.

"Her chin is held high, suggesting self-confidence and when we can see her eyes beneath the peak of the baseball cap they appear to have lost the doe-eyed and lidded-eyed expression and taken on a less rounded and more level, assured shape to also suggest social confidence."

During the interview with Drury, the 21 year old is seen being friendly and even joking around with him.

Judi goes on to explain it shows Shamima's "extrovert personality" shining through.

She went on: "Walking side-by-side with Drury they chat like friends and she could almost be co-presenting rather than the interviewee.

"Her hand gestures suggest a more extrovert personality, occurring quite high and near shoulder level and her movement suggests energy and enthusiasm.

"Her speech matches this in pace, being fast and snappy, with quick retorts when she jokes with Drury over the comedy Friends.

"Their hug also looks intensely friendly. Having waved her hand to avoid a handshake, Begum moves into the hug swiftly and keenly, even placing one arm around Drury’s neck in a signal of close rapport."

After marrying an ISIS fighter and living with the group for more than three years, she re-emerged in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019 when she was nine months pregnant.

Shamima, who eventually lost the baby, was seen begging for the chance to return to her home country, but her British citizenship was revoked and her return blocked by a court amid security concerns.

She will tell her story in a new documentary The Return: Life After ISIS which is due to air on Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW on June 15 at 9pm.
