Shamima Begum asks British people to 'give me a second chance' in new documentary

ISIS bride Shamima Begum pleads for a second chance and wants people to 'put aside everything they've heard about me' in a new documentary released today.

She left the UK as a 15-year-old to join the self-styled Islamic State and to marry an ISIS fighter.

But when the terror group was defeated, she ended up in a camp in Syria.

Now she wants to return home to Britain – and has told film-makers why she will fight to stop her citizenship being revoked.

The Return: Life After ISIS airs on Wednesday and she explains to the government why she is not a threat to national security.

"My name's Shamima. I'm from the UK. I'm 19," she says, wearing a hijab at the start.

"I would say to the people in the UK, give me a second chance because I was still young when I left.

"I just want them to put aside everything they've heard about me in the media."

The footage of Begum was captured in 2019, soon after she was discovered at a prison camp.

Her interview comes six years after she shocked the nation by running away from her East London home to join the terror group.

She appears later with her head uncovered, in sunglasses and wearing Western clothes.

In February, Britain's Supreme Court rejected her bid to return to challenge a decision stripping her citizenship on the grounds of national security.

Human rights campaigners have branded the court decision a “disgrace”.

Sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor, who designed the Orbit tower in the Olympic Park in London, said the ban was a: “disgraceful indictment of our national conscience”.

Sir Anish, 67, said: “Imagine that four young white schoolgirls from Wiltshire were enticed to go to Syria and join Isis.

“Would they be seen as terrorists or victims of terrorists?

“We have no doubt that we would be demanding that no expense be spared and not a moment wasted in having them returned to the safety of their homes in England.”
