A heartless thief has stolen protective face masks and gloves to protect NHS staff from coronavirus after smashing their way into a van parked on a Merseyside street.
Appalled police today blasted the culprit's "complete lack of empathy" after the thief smashed a window to seize the crucial equipment from the NHS van parked in Kirkby.
Officers are now hunting the thief behind the sickening crime which comes as efforts to get more face masks and other protective equipment for NHS frontline staff continues.
The thief struck in Greenham Avenue at some point between 10.30pm on Tuesday, March 31 and 5.45am on Wednesday.

Face masks and gloves were taken, police confirmed.
The incident was reported to police today.
Chief Inspector Phil Mullally said: “This shows a complete lack of empathy towards our emergency service colleagues who are working tirelessly to protect the wider community.
"This equipment is vital in allowing NHS staff to complete their job and in the current climate where we are supposed to be supporting each other and working together, it is upsetting to see this sort of crime has taken place. Help us find the person/s responsible.”
