Shamed SNP MSP Derek Mackay ditched from Boys' Brigade role over schoolboy texting scandal

Disgraced former finance secretary Derek Mackay has been stripped of his honorary position with the Boys’ Brigade in the wake of the schoolboy texting scandal.

The 42-year-old MSP was honorary vice president of the Paisley and District battalion and had attended its events for many years.

Now, the organisation has confirmed Mackay has been ditched from the role following a review.

We told yesterday how Mackay was awaiting the imminent conclusion of a police investigation into his alleged “grooming” of a teenager.

He resigned as a minister last week after it was revealed he’d contacted a 16-year-old boy on social media and bombarded him with 270 messages.

Mackay invited the teen to dinner and a rugby event and called him “cute”.

The Record also told how SNP activist Shaun Cameron, 25, was hounded online by Mackay for nearly four years.

Shaun received dozens of unwanted messages from Mackay, including one asking for “naughty pics”. He was interviewed by police on Monday about his ordeal.

The withdrawal of Mackay’s position with the Boys’ Brigade is the latest blow to the shamed politician.

The group had ordered a review of his role following the revelations.

Acting Boys’ Brigade chief executive Jonathan Eales said yesterday: “As a result of this review, I can confirm Derek Mackay is no longer listed as an honorary vice president of Paisley and District battalion.”

He previously said Mackay was “not a volunteer youth leader within the Boys’ Brigade and has no active role working with our young people”.

It’s understood police will decide on a way forward in their probe in the next few days.

All three opposition party leaders have called on Mackay to quit Holyrood altogether.
