Shamed Scots sex assault councillor clings onto role

A shamed Scots sex offender councillor is clinging onto to his role- despite being told he can no longer take any position in the council.

Former Tory Alan Donnelly was last night still a city councillor in Aberdeen even after his colleagues agreed yesterday he can no longer sit on any committees or attend any civic functions.

Donnelly was found guilty in December of sexually assaulting a male waiter at a black tie function when representing the city as the depute provost.

Following his conviction he was placed on the sex offender's register and resigned from the Conservative party.

He has also been reported to the standards commission who are still considering their decision.

But despite pressure from all sides to quit as a councillor he has stayed on representing Torry and Ferryhill.

Aberdeen South SNP MP Stephen Flynn called again on Donnelly to resign to allow a city byelection.

He said: "We need to remember who the victim is here – the innocent man who was assaulted by Alan Donnelly.

“The public are in no doubt that Alan Donnelly must stand down so the people can give this toxic administration the boot once and for all.”

Council co-leader, and Tory group boss, Douglas Lumsden, said: "We didn't feel it is right for him to sit on any committees or go to civic functions so we took this action.

"But there are only two people that can make him resign- himself and the standards commission."

A Conservative party spokesman said: "Following his conviction, we believe that Alan Donnelly should resign as a councillor."

Donnelly could not be reached for comment yesterday.
