Shamed MP Margaret Ferrier told to resign by Rutherglen and Cambuslang branches of the SNP

The local SNP branch of shamed MP Margaret Ferrier have called on the Rutherglen politician to resign.

The Rutherglen SNP Constituency Association, which represents the Rutherglen, Cambuslang and Blantyre branches of the party, have issued an statement expressing that they are "hurt and disappointed" at her actions.

Ms Ferrier last week travelled to London despite having coronavirus symptoms. After speaking in Parliament she found she had tested positive fo the illness, and chose to return by train to Scotland, defying medical guidelines and possibly spreading the virus in the process.

She has already been asked to resign by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP's Westminster leader Ian Blackford and numerous other political figures.

The local party branch have also offered to help Ms Ferrier's office staff, who could be out of a job if she resigns.

They stated: “The Rutherglen SNP Constituency Association has been contacted by many members who share our shock, anger and sadness at the recent actions of Margaret Ferrier MP. We are also acutely aware of the anger that has been voiced by many of Margaret’s constituents.

“Being colleagues and friends of Margaret, we are of course concerned for her wellbeing, and have sent her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

“However, we fully support and agree with the Party’s swift and decisive action taken to remove the whip from Margaret, suspend her Party membership and to ask her to step aside as our MP. After convening an emergency meeting last Friday evening, we made this clear to her in writing.

“We did so with a heavy heart, knowing how hard working and committed an MP and campaigner Margaret has
been to this point. To say we are hurt and disappointed by her actions is an understatement.

“We have advised Margaret that she should do the right thing and resign now. This would be the honourable course of action. Margaret’s staff, who we have a great deal of sympathy with, are directly employed by her and not the Party. We are happy to work with them to support them in any way we can, if they so wish."

Ms Ferrier has remained silent about the situation since her initial statement announcing her actions last week.
