Shamed Harvey Weinstein appeals sexual assault conviction and seeks new trial

Shamed Harvey Weinstein is appealing his sexual assault conviction and wants another trial.

The former Hollywood producer is arguing that a New York judge denied him an impartial jury when he was convicted last year of sexual assault and rape, according to a Monday court filing.

Weinstein, 69, was sentenced in March 2020 by Justice James Burke of Manhattan criminal court to 23 years in prison for assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and raping fformer aspiring actress Jessica Mann.

Weinstein's court filing says he was denied a presumption of innocence when Burke allowed the jury to hear testimony from women who alleged Weinstein assaulted them even though their allegations did not result in a criminal charge.

Weinstein has denied any nonconsensual sexual encounters.

We told you how the convicted rapist reportedly tested positive for coronavirus last March.

He was initially held at Rikers Island, a notorious state prison in New York City.

However, he was transferred to the maximum security Wende Correctional Facility near Buffalo in New York state.

Reports in America said the 68-year-old is one of two inmates at the jail who have tested positive for Covid-19 with Weinstein now isolated from the rest of the prison population.

Prison chiefs in New York State last week announced that all visits to inmates would be suspended to help stop the spread of the virus with jails.
