Shamed fly-tipper forced to collect dumped couch after pub issues ultimatum

A shamed fly-tipper was forced to skulk back in the dead-of-night to collect the sofa he dumped after being caught on CCTV.

Yesterday morning, owners of the Lock and Quay discovered a couch had been dumped outside their pub in Bootle.

On inspecting the CCTV footage, they saw the culprit - a man driving a white transit van - pull the well-loved brown two-seater out of the van.

He left the couch against a wall on the premises before fleeing the scene thinking they hadn't been seen.

However, everything was caught by the CCTV cameras, including the license plate number of the van as well as a good view of the driver.

Not content with accepting the abandoned couch on their property, the owners of the pub posted on Facebook images taken from CCTV clearly showing the man dumping the sofa and the registration of the van he was driving.

The post read: "Can all of our lovely customers please share this post!

"To the owner of this white van, you have 24 hours to collect your couch which you so kindly dumped at our door. It isn't our fault you didn't have a permit for the tip.

"If the couch is still there this time tomorrow, the matter will be passed to the police. Thanks."

The post was shared more than 400 times and had reached over 30,000 people.

The countdown threat to contact the police if the driver didn't come back to collect the couch seemed to do the trick.

Just 24 hours later, it had been removed. Inspection of the CCTV showed that the same man and van piling the fly-tipped sofa back into his vehicle before driving off in the middle of the night.

After their triumph, the owners of the Lock and Quay posted an image of the man collecting his rubbish, with the message: "All's well that ends well! Couch has thankfully been reunited with its rightful owner, the white van man!

"Thanks to all of the support of our lovely patrons!"

Followers of the pub congratulated the owners for the post and making the culprit face the consequences of his actions.

One woman said: "That's brilliant, and I cant help but laugh about what his thought process must have been having to get it after it then being soaked after the rain xx."

Another woman replied: "Wonder how many people saw it and said "Ey, you're all over Facebook looking like a right scruff"."

One woman posted: "Great news. Hopefully make others think about their actions too."
