Shakur Stevenson sends message to Josh Warrington ahead of world title fight

Shakur Stevenson is ready to end Josh Warrington's frustrating wait for a unification clash.

The rising star of the featherweight division bids to win his first world title in just his 13th professional fight against Joet Gonzalez on Saturday night.

And should the Olympic silver medalist triumph, he will have only one name on his mind.

"After this fight I want to put pressure on Josh," Stevenson told Mirror Fighting. "I'm not looking past Joet but I know what I'm capable of and I know I'm going to come out with a victory.

"Then I'm going to put pressure on Josh; I want him to know that if they don't fight me now I'm moving up to 130lb.

"I'm going to make sure they know that I want to unify after this fight. I don't want to wait, I don't want a defence, I want to go straight into a unification."

Warrington has become a star in his home city of Leeds and won his world title by upsetting Lee Selby before making successful defences against Carl Frampton and Kid Galahad.

He then wanted to face either Oscar Valdez or Leo Santa Cruz but both opted to move up to super-featherweight leaving Warrington to demolish Sofiane Takoucht inside two rounds.

The Brit has long dreamed of taking his army of dabs to New York or Las Vegas but Stevenson, who is named after the rapper Tupac Shakur, is willing to face Warrington in Leeds.

"I'm cool with coming to the UK," he added. "He's been a champion longer and I have a lot of respect for him and what he's done.

“He beat a lot of names already and he was definitely the underdog going into those fights.

“I don't take any credit away from him, I don't mind going into his backyard for the fight.”
