Shaker Aamer’s case raises big questions

The news that Shaker Aamer has been released from Guantánamo Bay is brilliant to all who have campaigned for his release and to his British family who feared he would never come home. He has shown immense fortitude during his incarceration. He now needs time to recover from the ordeal he has endured for nearly 14 years: Shaker and his family need privacy, and we hope their wishes will be respected. But there are questions to be answered in the future. How was this gross injustice allowed to happen? Why was it not brought to an end many years ago? Was the UK government complicit in any way in prolonging his imprisonment and torture? We require answers so that this travesty of justice never happens again.
