Shake Shack launches Korean-inspired chicken sandwich and menu

Shake Shack’s new Korean-inspired menu includes the Korean-Style Fried Chick’n Sandwich, Korean Gochujang Chick’n Bites and a Black Sugar Vanilla Shake. | Shake Shack

Shake Shack has added new Korean-inspired menu items across U.S. locations, adding fuel to the 2021 chicken sandwich war.

For a limited time, the chain is serving the new Korean-Style Fried Chick’n Sandwich and Korean Gochujang Chick’n Bites (crispy, whole white meat chicken bites served with spicy-sweet gochujang mayo sauce) and Korean Gochujang Fries (crispy crinkle cut fries served with spicy-sweet gochujang mayo sauce).

The burger chain is also adding a Black Sugar Vanilla Shake, made with caramel black sugar, vanilla frozen custard and black sugar syrup (a dark-colored sugar with a caramel flavor).

In a blog post, Shake Shack said the gochujang is made with red chili peppers, sticky rice, fermented soybeans and salt. The result is a red fermented, spicy-sweet paste packed with umami flavor. It’s used as an anchor in all kinds of stews, marinades and sauces. Meanwhile, the sandwich also includes a kimchi slaw, a mix of fermented vegetables (Napa cabbage, daikon radish and green onion in Shake Shack’s version) and spices.

Shake Shack wasn’t the only one unveiling a new chicken sandwich to start 2021. On Monday, McDonald’s also started out the year by announcing the release of three new chicken sandwiches on Feb. 24.
