Shaftesbury Avenue incident: Major road closed due to gas leak

Police have closed a major road in London's West End due to a gas leak.

Shaftesbury Avenue northbound is currently shut this afternoon (Monday, August 26) due to the incident.

The road is closed from the A4 at Piccadilly Circus to Great Windmill Street.

Pictures from the scene show numerous police cars and fire engines near Piccadilly Circus.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area, which is popular with tourists and theatregoers.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police confirmed that they had attended and said the gas board was also assisting with the response.

Large parts of the road were cordoned off as emergency services deal with the incident.

Bus routes 14, 19 and 38 are currently running on diversion. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.

Transport for London said: “Drivers are advised to seek alternative route. Expect delays on approach.”

BBC London Travel tweeted: "Central: Shaftesbury Avenue is blocked Northbound from #Piccadilly Circus following a gas leak. Buses 14, 19 + 38 divert."
