Shadow chancellor speaks out on Liverpool FC's furlough decision

New shadow chancellor Anneliese Dodds spoke out against Liverpool FC, following the news they were furloughing non-playing staff.

It was announced over the weekend that Liverpool were entering into the government's furlough job retention scheme to pay non-playing staff 80 per cent of their salaries.

The additional 20 per cent will then be topped up by the club itself to ensure no worker has their income affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Ms Dodds said she recognises the anger caused by Liverpool FC furloughing non-playing staff as stars get huge salaries.

The new shadow chancellor told Good Morning Britain : "I think that's causing a lot of public anger.

"I think there's also been public anger in relation to other employers who haven't behaved in a compassionate manner towards their staff when they have had, traditionally, profit levels that would mean they should have ballast at this time, they should be able to treat their staff properly."

Ms Dodd also said it is "critical" that ministers start working on a way out of the economic shutdown immediately.

The Labour MP said: "I think it's critical that the Government look at that economic exit strategy now because it will take some time to plan.

"I really hope also they will be working closely with other countries on this because we will need to have a global boost.

"We need to learn from how other countries are dealing with this."

She said she would be speaking to her counterpart in Government, Rishi Sunak, later in the day as she stressed the importance of working with the Tories during the crisis.
