Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer came to knock on doors in Bristol - this is what happened

Labour politicians and candidates have been pounding the streets of south Bristol ahead of the European Elections.

Sir Keir Starmer made a special visit to the city to support current south west MP Clare Moody and candidate Andrew Adonis as they spoke to voters out on the campaign trail.

The European elections take place on May 23 with Clare Moody hoping to retain her seat representing the south west and be joined by former journalist and advisor to Tony Blair Mr Adonis.

Sir Starmer  - MP For Holborn and St Pancras and shadow Brexit secretary - spent the morning spent door knocking the constituents of south Bristol had been positive.

And he said that many people said they wanted the current impass with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit to be resolved.

Sir Starmer -  former director of public prosecutions and the head of the crown Prosecution Services -said: "There has been a good response to our campaigning on the doorsteps.

"The Labour party voted to remain in the European Union in 2016 but let the Prime Minister have the time - the two years - to pull together a deal.

"Our manifesto was clear that in the event of a bad deal or no deal we should go back to the public and ask if this is the basis on which they wish to leave the EU.

"Whether people voted leave or remain they are fed up with the position that the Prime Minister has got us into.

"Decisions taken now will affect generations to come."

Clare Moody added that voters in south Bristol were fed up with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

She said: "In Bristol south 53 per cent of people voted remain and 47 voted leave.

"This is why people are looking again at whether there should be a further democratic check on what should happen next."

Labour candidate Andrew Adonis said: "The big message we have seen on the doorstep is 'Stop Farage.

"People are worried that he will win on the basis that the opposition are divided.

"Only Labour can stop Farage and we need to win in the south west to make sure he does not triumph."
