SGPC objects to mentioning Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as terrorist in Punjabi University syllabus

AMRITSAR: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has taken note of a book published by the Distance Education Department of Punjabi University, in which, Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale has allegedly been mentioned as "terrorist" in the syllabus of MA political science.

While demanding a strict action in this matter, the SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, in a release on Wednesday alleged "the controversial language has been used by the Punjabi University in the Punjabi medium book of MA political science. On page 26 onwards of the concerned book starting with chapter heading ‘Punjab De Sikh Jangju Andolan Da Vishleshan' (analysis of Sikh militant movement in Punjab), Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale has been targeted and the curriculum contains more controversial information about the Sikh struggle."

Dhami said that the SGPC had written a letter to the vice-chancellor of Punjabi University and the concerned department asking to clarify the content.

"Such a mischievous act by Punjabi University is an expression of its anti-Punjab and anti-Sikh intentions which could endanger the peaceful atmosphere of Punjab" warned Dhami adding that legal action would be taken if the university did not amend the content and apologize.
