SFA warn parents NOT to watch their kids play football as spectators urged to stay away over coronavirus fears

Parents have been warned by the SFA to steer clear of watching their kids play football.

Hampden chiefs have sent out letters asking spectators not to attend grassroot games as Covid-19 wreaks more havoc on Scotland’s national sport.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has agreed that 300 fans will be allowed at Aberdeen’s game with Kilmarnock and Ross County’s home match with Celtic, but supporters are being urged to stay away from kids’ football.

The SFA issued their plea in conjunction with the Scottish Youth Football Association.

Their letter said: “As much as we would want parents and spectators to support youngsters it is too big a risk for large groups to gather and risk spread of the virus.

"We ask all of you to respect these guidelines otherwise we risk football being stopped again and the losers will be your youngsters

“More specifically in a match context we ask you don’t gather to spectate.”

Grassroots football has been in lockdown since March although teams have been allowed to return on a staged basis with the season pencilled in to start next month. A separate letter from a local FA was sent to clubs to be passed on to parents and carers.

It read: “We know parents and carers would want to watch their child but they must be made to understand that football is on trial.

“Should there be an increase in the spread of the virus due to adults congregating at matches there is a real risk the Government could stop all football.

“We would hope that after there has been a chance to evaluate the risks we can allow parents to once again attend matches, while
maintaining their social distance.”
