SFA told to take Celtic action over X-rated Douglas Ross banner as referee association takes row to Hampden

The Scottish Senior Football Referees' Association have reportedly called for the SFA to take action against Celtic after a banner was unveiled slamming linesman Douglas Ross.

The Scottish Conservatives leaders was the subject of a banner which read "VAR DECISION: DOUGLAS ROSS IS A C***" as he ran the line during the first half of the 5-1 Scottish Cup win for Ange Postescoglou's side and footage went viral on social media appearing to show the politician glancing in the direction of it as St Mirren keeper Trevor Carson went to take a goal-kick. Viaplay Sports commentator Rory Hamilton made an on-air apology when the banner appeared on screen, but representatives for Scottish referees have reportedly called the Hampden chiefs to take action.

The Daily Mail report that the association, which represents officials have made representations to the SFA's compliance officer over the issue. However, as it stands Scottish football has no levers to punish clubs for offensive banners displayed by supporters.

The report claims that the SSFRA sources hope the compliance officer will write to Celtic asking what measures they took to prevent the display of the banner "at the least." They hope they will be urging the Scottish Premiership leaders to take action to "prevent a repeat."

Speaking on the banner, Ross said: "I saw the banner being unveiled, I don't think anyone could have not seen it given the size it was. But my duty at Celtic Park was to run the line, to be an assistant referee, and that's where my focus was for the entire 90 minutes."
