SFA's rejection of Lowland League plan leaves 400 players in limbo

Scottish Lowlands Development Football League (SLDFL) have appealed to the SFA in hope of altering eligibility rules.

The Scottish FA's professional game board initially rejected a proposal to extend the age limit of the league from under-20 to under-21.

The SLDFL want to increase the age limit to include players that missed out on a full season of football last season due to the pandemic.

Due to Covid, the league was unable to start last season and the SLDFL want to compensate those players by allowing them to play this season.

Their proposal would allow all players who were officially registered by February 5th to play for their clubs for an extra season.

It's understood that around 400 players will be affected by the SFA's decision to reject the initial proposal and it's also caused the start date for the season to be delayed until Wednesday, July 30.

A meeting took place last night between member clubs and the decision was made to ask the SFA to reconsider their stance.

The SLDFL said: "Following our meeting with member clubs last night who are affected by the 21s rule change proposal being rejected by the PGB, we have today written to the SFA asking if they would reconsider this.

"We feel strongly that these young men deserve the opportunity to play in the Development League after missing out last year due to the global pandemic, after all these are unprecedented times we are living in."
