SFA launch 11th hour fan bid as Ian Maxwell fronts UEFA plea to allow Scottish Cup Final Hampden crowd

SFA boss Ian Maxwell will on Tuesday launch an 11th-hour bid to get fans into Hampden for the Scottish Cup Final – as UEFA consider a plan to take the Champions League Final to Wembley.

Record Sport understands Maxwell will hold talks with football’s European governors in the next 24 hours to explore opening up the National Stadium for the end-of- season finale between Hibs and St Johnstone.

UEFA had ordered the clash go ahead behind closed doors to allow them to carry out building work inside the ground ahead of it being used for the Euros.

But Maxwell will argue that punters should be allowed in if UEFA are prepared to make a similar allowance in London so that fans can attend.

UEFA want to switch the clash between Chelsea and Manchester City to England and that is being talked over in Nyon, in order to have around 25,000 at the final as a test event ahead of the summer tournament.

And Maxwell hopes UEFA may also give him the go-ahead to open up the turnstiles on May 22.

The all-English clash will definitely not be played in Istanbul, as slated, albeit Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to block it being moved to Wembley.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has offered to stage the final at Pittodrie if it meant fans will be allowed to attend.

Cormack insists he has not spoken to the SFA but went public on Monday.

Record Sport revealed last month the governing authority had considered alternatives like Ibrox, Murrayfield and Celtic Park before deciding Hampden was the only viable option.

Cormack told Record Sport : “We’d be happy to consider Pittodrie being the final venue if it helped get fans in the stadium and was something both teams and the SFA wanted.”
