SFA issued Celtic call to action after Rangers coach Craig McPherson 'lost the head' with Fran Alonso headbutt

Former Celtic striker Ruesha Littlejohn reckons the SFA will "act accordingly" and move to punish Rangers coach Craig McPherson after his headbutt on Fran Alonso.

It was meant to be a momentous occasion for Scottish women's football with it being the first top-flight game to be televised on Sky Sports as title holder Rangers looked to close the gap on leaders Glasgow City by seeing off Celtic - who have their own title aspirations. Brogan Hay had given the Light Blues the lead after great work from Emma Watson, however deep into second half stoppage time Caitlin Hayes popped up with a dramatic equaliser.

That led to tensions to spill over on the full-time whistle with a fizzing McPherson running up to Alonso and appeared to headbutt him from behind while both sets of players tried to calm proceedings. Littlejohn played for Celtic between 2016 and 2018, and admitted she has never witnessed scenes as distasteful as what occurred at Broadwood Stadium.

She told talkSPORT: "It's not something we've seen before in the women's game but the sport is getting bigger and I think maybe emotions have taken over but I'm sure it will be dealt with accordingly."

Asked about her experiences of Old Firm women's clashes, Littlejohn replied: "In a Rangers Celtic game, no. Obviously it's been heated at times but there's been nothing too much to talk about. I think there's been a few red cards over the years but in terms of managers getting involved, there's probably just been a bit of argy bargy on the sidelines.

"I am sure he (McPherson) will go away and hold his hands up and say 'it was not right'. In the heat of the moment, he has absolutely lost his head but I am sure the SFA will deal with it accordingly."
