SFA confirm Hampden remains amongst Euro 2020 venues

Glasgow is still one of the host cities for Euro 2020 despite speculation that it would be one of three to be potentially dumped due to ongoing coronavirus issues.

The 12 selected host cities originally selected are Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and St Petersburg but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted there are "some issues" with three on the list.

Ceferin said: “The idea is that we stay in the same cities. We have had conversations with nine cities and everything is set.

“With three cities, we have some issues. So we will discuss further, and in principle, we will do it in 12 cities. But if not, we are ready to do it in 10, nine or eight.”

Hampden currently has three group games and a last-16 match to be played next summer after the pandemic killed the idea of a summer tournament this year.

But if three cites do indeed drop out, it means Scottish fans could get even more elite action to feast their eyes on.

German publication Kicker had suggested the matched at Hampden could be under threat but the Local Organising Structure Glasgow has moved to back last night's story in Record Sport that games in Scotland will continue and the number could even be swelled.

Whilst a final announcement will not be made until May 27 it's understood Hampden is certain to still host matches.

LOS Glasgow spokesperson said: “The formal confirmation letter was sent on 14 May to the UEFA EURO 2020 Operations Director, Sharon Burkhalter-Lau, together with all the required accompanying documentation.

“This followed extensive discussions with all relevant stakeholders and partners involved in hosting the tournament in Glasgow since the March 17 postponement decision.

“We look forward to Hampden Park, Glasgow and the Scotland as a whole playing a key role as co-hosts of a memorable UEFA EURO 2020 next year.”
