SFA chief Ian Maxwell amateur game action plan promise after grassroots football plea

East Kilbride YM boss Graeme Robertson has revealed he held crunch talks with SFA chief Ian Maxwell after his plea for a return of the amateur game.

The club have been out of action since October 3 when they lost 2-1 to Thorn Athletic in their Caledonian League opener due to Covid restrictions on the amateur game.

Currently, YM will only be allowed to return when the tiered system drops to level two – while the professional game continues during the pandemic.

Last week, Robertson revealed fears that the amateur ranks had become “an afterthought” while SPFL and SFA Joint Response Group pushed for a return of fans from the Premiership to League Two.

However, after writing to the governing body in his role as chief at the Caledonian League, Robertson believes Maxwell will push forward with plans for the return of the divisions.

He said: “He phoned me after we had sent two letters from the Caledonian League to ask what was going to happen in terms of support for amateur football.

“We had an honest conversation where I gave him what the thoughts were from a Caledonian League perspective, and what we felt like the groundswell of support was for amateur football.

“I feel they haven’t been as open and vocal in their support of amateur football as they should have been, but he said he was going to make contact with the SAFA and launch an immediate action plan.

“It means we can finally get a roadmap to getting back to playing football.”
