Darren Young blasts SFA and SPFL for taking zero responsibility over Covid tests

Cambuslang native Darren Young has blasted the SFA and SPFL for taking “zero responsibility” of coronavirus testing at football clubs.

The East Fife manager is gearing up for the return of football in League One in October, with training to return this month.

However, testing has been thrown into the national spotlight after Aberdeen players testing positive resulted in the clash with St Johnstone being postponed.

Former Dons’ star Young reckons the governing bodies have to take a more active approach to tackling the pandemic.

The 41-year-old says no clear information has been given to the Bayview club yet with just days before they are to come together again.

The part-time side also have worries over splitting testing between two locations, with players training in both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Young believes guidelines must be put in place to support the lower league clubs before the restart.

In a scathing blast, The Fifers gaffer said: “We’re meant to be back training at the end of the month, but there is a lot of things that we don’t know. We don’t know what is happening with testing really.

“Are we testing, or are we not? If we do test, then where do we test? In our position, do players coming from Edinburgh go to Glasgow, or do the Glasgow boys go to Edinburgh? Can we do both?

“There is a return date but everything is still up in the air. We don’t know if we will be expected to do one test or two tests every week.

“For me, the SFA and the SPFL should be turning round to clubs and saying we have testing centres, we are working in partnership with this service, here is how you can do it.

“It’s as if they are taking zero responsibility.

“They are basically saying there are five or six options and leaving it up to us. They are saying ‘here is what you can do, pick one yourself’.

“I can’t get my head around it. You would think for such a big organisation they would have something in place so we know it’s done right and everything is legitimate.

“They have had long enough to see how other countries do it and speak to them. They could look down in England.

“Really, clubs need clarity before anything else happens.”
