SFA and SPFL call for 'urgent' Nicola Sturgeon fan return talks in wake of major English stadium update

The SFA and SPFL have called on the Scottish Government to start planning for fans returning to football grounds after a welcome announcement down south.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has revealed a framework to allow supporters in England back into stadia as the blanket three-week lockdown is set to conclude early next month.

In the plans that come into place from December 2, up to 4,000 people can attend games in Tier 1 areas, while the permitted number is half that for Tier 2.

And the Joint Response Group - led by Ian Maxwell and Neil Doncaster of the two main governing bodies in Scottish football - believe it's time for First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to come up with a similar solution.

A spokesman said: “The news that clubs in England can prepare for the return of supporters is clearly extremely positive, and we will be seeking further urgent talks with the Scottish Government to establish a roadmap to getting fans safely back into Scottish grounds as soon as possible.

“Many of our clubs are in extremely precarious positions, given the enormous reliance on gate income in the Scottish game.

“Getting Scottish fans back into watch their beloved local clubs in the open air, in a controlled and carefully-regulated way, is absolutely essential for the future of Scottish clubs.”
