Sexual harassment complaints against serving magistrate spark calls for judicial conduct panel

South Australia's Judicial Conduct Commissioner called for a panel to be appointed to investigate sexual harassment claims against a serving magistrate after four more women came forward with complaints.

Judicial Conduct Commissioner Ann Vanstone QC started examining complaints about the conduct of a serving magistrate in May.

A female lawyer made a complaint in a survey conducted as part of a review into sexual harassment within the state's legal profession.

Chief Justice Chris Kourakis then referred the matter to Ms Vanstone.

Ms Vanstone released a public statement on Thursday night which revealed another four women have come forward with complaints.

"The complaints span a period of about seven years," Ms Vanstone said.

Ms Vanstone recommended the Attorney-General appoint a judicial conduct panel to investigate and report on the complaints.

A judicial conduct panel has not been appointed in South Australia before and would be made up of two current or former judicial officers and a layperson.

Ms Vanstone said the panel would have the same powers as a royal commission and would report to the Attorney-General on whether the removal of a judicial officer was justified.

"My own decision to make this recommendation does not involve my making factual findings about whether the alleged incidents occurred, or the circumstances of them; except to the extent necessary to inform my recommendation," she said.

In a statement, Attorney-General Vickie Chapman said she is considering the recommendation.
