Sexual assault 'inflicted tremendous pain' on 16yo girl

The suspect was described as being Caucasian, 18 to 19 years of age and 1.87 metres tall.

A man who sexually assaulted a 16-year-old Melbourne girl, who was so traumatised it took her a year to report the incident, must be held to account, the head of Crime Stoppers Victoria says.

The girl was leaving a party around Toorak College, in Mount Eliza, in Melbourne's south-east, on Saturday May 7 last year, when she approached two men behind her thinking she knew them.

One man grabbed her and pulled her into some bushes between Ti-Tree Lane and Williams Road, Mount Eliza.

A second man stood by and acted as a look-out while the girl was sexually assaulted.

"This [girl] was traumatised so badly that she actually didn't report it until a year later," said Cathy Rhodes, of Crime Stoppers Victoria.

"He has inflicted tremendous pain and suffering on this innocent young woman.

"He needs to be held accountable."

Ms Rhodes said generally people were not very good at keeping secrets and someone must know who was responsible.

Constable Laura Colley of the Victoria Police Sexual Crimes Squad said any piece of information could help.

"This is a senseless and vicious attack on an innocent young woman... who had been enjoying a nice evening with friends," she said.

An image of the suspect released today was of a Caucasian man, about 18 or 19 years old, wearing a black-hooded jacket or jumper with the hood up.

He was also wearing a grey t-shirt, khaki shorts and was about 1.8 metres tall.

Anyone who recognises the man is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
