Sex trafficking: Assam police rescue 9 women

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An interstate sex trafficking gang that operated in the city was busted by Assam police on Friday. They saved nine women from the gang and arrested two men. The women and the accused persons were taken into custody from two hotels that functioned under Thampanoor and Medical College police station limits.

Police sources said that the accused as well as the women hailed from Assam. The gang’s modus operandi was to trap the women from Assam and bring them to the city for prostitution. Assam police had been conducting a probe to track down the gang members and arrest them. Tracing the mobile phone signals of two of the gang members, Assam police team reached the city. The arrests were made with the assistance of shadow cops of the city police after the Assam team met city police commissioner IG Balram Kumar Upadhyay and sought his help.

The arrested people and the women saved will be taken back to Assam after producing them before a local magistrate here, the police said.
