Sex offender with one leg died less than a year into prison term

A one-legged sex offender died less than a year after being jailed for the misery he caused.

James Reilly was sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexual offences back in March 2018.

He died the following February, aged 85, after suffering heart failure.

Details of the pensioner's death - including that he did not wish to be resuscitated if found unresponsive - have now emerged following an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO).

The PPO makes enquiries about all deaths in jail.

Reilly was sent Walton jail on March 13, 2018 after being handed his 16 year sentence.

He arrived in prison with pre-existing medical conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He also had a prosthetic leg and used a wheelchair.

Reilly was sent to hospital after suffering a heart attack on February 20 of last year and staff filled out a 'do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation' order on his behalf.

He returned to prison but on July 5 was found unresponsive in his cell.

An ambulance was called and the PPO said "prison healthcare staff attempted resuscitation when Mr Reilly was found unresponsive in his cell, which was against his wishes".

They were unable to save him and paramedics confirmed he was dead when they arrived.

His cause of death was heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The PPO report said: "The clinical reviewer concluded that the care Mr Reilly received at Liverpool was satisfactory and equivalent to that which he could have expected to receive in the community. Healthcare staff provided prompt and responsive primary care."

The review found Reilly's second health screening at the prison was held later than it should have been, and there was "no clear process" at the jail to log requests not to resuscitate.

Walton jail said action to address both issues was taken in the aftermath of Reilly's death.
