Sex Education: Viewers react to 'hella weird masturbation montage' in opening episode

Sex Education returned to Netflix on Friday (17 January) for its second season, and its opening scene has had a very strong reaction from viewers.

The teen drama, which stars Asa Butterfield as a reluctant teenage sex therapist, has never shied away from ribald storylines – and it appears the new episodes are no exception.

In the opening scene of episode one, there is a two-and-a-half-minute montage of Otis masturbating in various locations, from his bedroom to a car park, and fans have been taking to Twitter to express their bewilderment.

“So I've loved Asa Butterfield since Merlin, and Nanny McPhee, and watching him in a w***ing montage is hella weird,” wrote one viewer.

“I’m 30 seconds in, CAN OTIS STOP W***ING PLEASE!” a second said.

Another tweeted: "How else would Sex Education start off a season other than a masturbation montage?"

Referencing former child star Butterfield’s previous roles, one fan said: “When I was 11 years old watching cute little blue eyed Bruno trying to save his lil mate in Boy In The Striped Pyjamas the LAST thing I would have imagined is that at 22 I’d be watching him w*** himself into oblivion on a show called Sex Education but here we are.”

Sex Education is available to stream on Netflix now.
