Sex, booze and drugs - is it time that this notorious 'no-go alleyway' was closed for good?

Sex, drugs and booze - welcome to Tameside's "no-go" alley.

Over the years, this graffiti-covered underpass has become a hot spot for anti-social behaviour.

Littered with needles and broken glass, it isn't somewhere you'd want to walk through during the day, let alone the night.

The grimy tunnel runs underneath the dual carriageway in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre, connecting Church Street with the Lower Wharf Street area.

According to those working and living nearby, drug taking, drinking - even people having sex against the urine-stained walls - are not uncommon sights down there, regardless of time of day.

Many describe it as 'dangerous' - and say it is time it is closed off for good.

The Station Hotel on Warrington Street is right by the town centre entrance to the underpass.

Landlady Pauline Town says many of her customers are too scared or intimidated to walk that way anymore.

She is one of those calling for it to be shut off, and is backing a petition to Tameside Council urging them to take action.

"I've walked through and seen them injecting into their groins," she said.

"People having sex. They just don't seem fazed by people walking past.

"There's a school next to us and children walk that way with their parents, they shouldn't have to see that.

"Drug dealing is another problem, and it's not just at night it happens, it's all the time.

"Quite often what you see if young men coming down on push bikes and people waiting in the subway.

"They ride through, the deals are done, and they're gone.

"Or they'll be people stood waiting on the street, it could be half an hour, and it's obvious what they're waiting for because a car will pull up and then they'll disappear."

The field on the far side of the tunnel is often used by teenagers and others as a place to hang around and drink and smoke.

Pauline fears with the warmer weather approaching, things will only get worse.

"It is going to be bedlam," she added. "Everyone using it.

"It needs to be closed, it is the only one left which is why it's attracting so much trouble.

"We don't need it. There's safe crossings just up the road near the church and down by Asda."

Around 100 people have signed the petition so far.

One person posted on the page: "A scary place to walk alone even in daylight. A major health hazard especially with used drug paraphernalia lying on the ground."

Another added:  "Close off this unneeded area, it is attracting drug dealers and drug takers and is unsafe."

Tameside council has been approached for comment.
