Sex attacker who pounced on schoolgirl caught after she saw him at supermarket

A sex attacker who pounced on a 13-year-old girl as she walked home was caught after his victim spotted him weeks later outside a supermarket.

Stephen Nugent had chased the girl and indecently assaulted her after she turned down his drunken advances.

He has now been warned he faces a long prison sentence for the “terrifying” attack. Nugent, 46, admitted molesting the girl in Cumbernauld on November 21, 2021.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard it happened as she was walking home from a friend’s house about 8.30pm.

Kevin Jarvis, prosecuting, said: “She saw the accused who was unsteady on his feet and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.” Sheriff Scott Pattison deferred sentence on Nugent, of Cumbernauld, until next month and put him on the sex offenders’ register.

He continued bail after hearing that he cares for his seriously-ill father.

The sheriff amended bail conditions so that he will be confined to his home for all but two hours each day.
