‘Sex and the City’ author Candace Bushnell one-woman show shuts after COVID diagnosis

NEW YORK — "Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell — also known as the real Carrie Bradshaw — will no longer perform her one-woman show in New York after testing positive for coronavirus.

Bushnell, 63, was notified of her infection just before she was about to go onstage Tuesday night to perform “Is There Still Sex In The City?” at the Daryl Roth Theatre, where the show opened Dec. 7.

“The producers … have announced that it is impossible for the production to continue, as Candace Bushnell has tested positive for COVID-19,” read a press release.

Despite the sudden end to the show’s New York run, a national tour is in development, as are potential international performances, according to the release.

“Working in the theater to create ‘Is There Still Sex in the City?’ Has been one of the most thrilling experiences of my life,” said Bushnell. “I can’t wait to take the show on the road and to continue working with this very wonderful and supportive community in the future!”

“We look forward to bringing the production back to New York at a safer time, as well as sending Candace around the world to tell the true story of the OG Carrie Bradshaw when it is safe to do so,” said producer Marc Johnston.

Speaking to the Daily News earlier this year, Bushnell said the show, which she also penned, is “really about a full journey,” telling “the story of New York City and being a woman who really wants to succeed in New York City and wants to succeed on her own terms, and wants to be as successful as a man.”

The takeaway, she said, “has never been to find Mr. Big and marry Mr. Big.”

With the premiere of HBO Max’s revival to “Sex and the City,” “And Just Like That,” earlier this month, came polarizing reviews and allegations of sexual assault leveled against Chris Noth, who portrayed Carrie’s love, Mr. Big in both series as well as the big-screen adaptations.

The allegations came to light following international headlines surrounding Noth after the shocking ending of the “And Just Like That” premiere.
