Seville play hardball with Diego Carlos as Newcastle United learn defender's lofty asking price

Newcastle United could have to increase their offer for Seville star Diego Carlos.

The La Liga title contenders don't want to part company with the Brazil international centre-back and Seville have slapped a £35million price tag on the defender.

Carlos has two years left on his current deal and has made 25 appearances for Seville this season, scoring twice in La Liga.

Seville are desperate to hang on to Carlos as they push for the title and the Europa League trophy this term with a knockout clash against Dinamo Zagreb coming up next month.

Newcastle's next move has been for a centre-back after the arrival of Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier.

But they remain in dialogue for Lille's Sven Botman while Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona is a loan option.

Ideally, the Magpies want to add another three or four faces to their squad as Eddie Howe looks to freshen things up for the crucial second half of the season.

The Trippier deal has dominated the early part of the window for co-owners Amanda Staveley, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's PIF.

However, work on other targets has been going on in the background and Newcastle are leaving no stone unturned.

Certainly, the first week of the January window has been intriguing for United fans as the new owners have put their money where their mouth is and it feels like a far cry from numerous winter trading periods under Mike Ashley.
