Sevilla supremo Monchi hails Javier Hernandez taking drastic wage cut to leave West Ham

Sevilla transfer guru Monchi has hailed Javier Hernandez for taking a massive pay-cut to join the Spanish side in a deal from West Ham that was confirmed on Monday morning.

Chicharito has departed east London after a two year stay with the Hammers, signing for three years in Seville for a reported fee of around £7m, with the Hammers netting £6.6m after the FIFA solidarity payment is paid by West Ham.

Hernandez was the highest earner in east London on £140,000 a week but, as football.london revealed on Monday morning, has taken a big pay cut to join the La Liga side where he will earn a basic wage of £75,000 a week.

Chicharito will also earn a £500,000 bonus if he helps fire Sevilla to Champions League qualification.

Hernandez scored 17 goals in 63 games for the Hammers after joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2017 for £17m, signed by Slaven Bilic and playing for three different managers during his 24-month stay.

Football.London understands the Hammers turned down two previous offers from Sevilla for the 31-year-old before the La Liga outfit finally met the asking price following the player asking to leave the club.

Monchi, who was heavily rumoured with taking a director of football position at Arsenal earlier this summer but opted to return to Sevilla from Roma, paid tribute to Hernandez taking a hit in the pocket to move to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

"I wanted to sign him a long time ago, Monchi said.

"And I must say that in my 20 years as a sports director I had never seen a football player lower his salary so much to sign for Sevilla. Javier convinced me in the first talk we had.

"He is an experienced forward who meets the requirements our coach wants."
