Sevilla president claims Julen Lopetegui received 'dizzying' offer from Tottenham to become boss

Sevilla president Jose Castro has claimed that Julen Lopetegui received a "dizzying" offer from Tottenham to become their next head coach.

Following Jose Mourinho's dismissal in April after a poor set of results in 2021, Daniel Levy is yet to find his man to take on the top job ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Following talks with Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte regarding the vacancy, it appeared that Paulo Fonseca would be appointed only for Spurs to switch their attention to Gennaro Gattuso following his Fiorentina exit.

With Spurs later pulling the plug on the former Italy international, Levy and new managing director of football Fabio Paratici are still trying to find Mourinho's successor nine weeks on from his dismissal.

Sevilla boss Lopetegui is one name to have been linked with the hotseat over the past two months after guiding his team to Europa League success last August and then fourth place in La Liga in 2020/21.

Speaking on El Larguero by Cadena SER on Tuesday evening, club president Castro revealed that the 54-year-old told him that he had received an offer from Tottenham but he is keen to remain at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

However, football.london understands that Lopetegui was spoken to by Paratici as a potential candidate but an official offer from Tottenham was not made.

"Julen rang me and told me. He said he'd received offers he'd not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham. But he said he doesn't forget things and that he is very motivated here," he explained (via Sevilla's official website).

"We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I'm sure he will bring much more to the club.

"You see his ability and leadership every day. Some coaches are more driven by economic factors but Julen is very clear that he is happy here and he even said it would be very difficult to find a better place to work than here."
