Severn Trent issues statement to residents after localised flooding in areas of Notts

Water provider Severn Trent has said it is sorry to residents who were affected by floods after heavy rainfall in parts of Ashfield.

Properties on a number of streets across both the Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield areas were affected by localised floods following storms on Sunday, June 14.

Huge downpours meant some streets became submerged in water, while further storms and torrential rain are forecast on Wednesday, June 17 - including a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms.

Speaking following Sunday's floods, Severn Trent apologised to residents who were affected by the heavy rain and said it is working to prevent further issues in the coming days.

A spokesperson said: "We’re really sorry to anyone who was affected by the heavy rain on Sunday, as we know just how devastating any kind of flooding can be.

"We’ve been carrying out checks on our network since to make sure everything is working as it should, and to confirm that issues were caused by the network becoming overwhelmed by the heavy rainfall.

"We’ll now be working closely with Nottinghamshire County Council, so together we can help prevent any further issues in the area."

David Hennigan, independent councillor for Central and New Cross in Sutton-in-Ashfield, supported residents and said some roads were "deluged" following the rainfall.

"The huge downpours on Sunday caused flash floods across Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby", he told Nottinghamshire Live.

"I'm pleased that the Ashfield District Council were on hand to provide assistance to residents with sandbags and help get rid of excess water.

"What this laid bare was the fact that some of our gullies are in a terrible condition. Some have not been cleaned for years.

"We’re also in constant communication with Severn Trent Water about specific issues around Sutton Lawn.

"Roads like Bridge Close, Lucknow Drive and Wrightson Close were deluged.

"They are currently investigating why these roads suffered more than others and once the problem has been identified – they have promised to rectify this."
