Severn Trent explains why water was shooting from pipe near Nottingham train station

Severn Trent Water has said third party damage to a pipe caused water to shoot into the air near Nottingham train station.

The water company was called out to the incident on Queensbridge Road following reports that water was spraying from the pipe on June 2.

Teams from the company stopped the water coming from the pipe and the firm says its staff will return to repair it.

The company adds that the incident will not cause any further water issues in the area.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We’ve been made aware of third party damage to one of our pipes, that’s not causing any problems to customer water supplies.

"Our teams have already been out to stop the water from coming out the pipe, and they will be returning to carry out a full repair.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience, but we will be making sure the pipe is back to normal as quickly as possible.”

The incident follows a number of severe water shortages across the Nottinghamshire area between Friday, May 29 and Tuesday, June 2.

Residents stretching from Nottingham and Arnold to Mansfield and Ashfield reported either having no water or reduced pressure during this period.

Severn Trent says it is a result of the Midlands using 300 million more litres of water a day in May than the average, due to the nice weather, the coronavirus lockdown and the reopening of garden centres.

The company has encourages residents to "ditch the sprinklers" in a bid to half the region's water usage, and says it will donate more than £1 million to charity if this is achieved.
