The weather bureau is warning people in the east of Tasmania to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf from Wednesday afternoon.

The heaviest falls are expected in the north-east and on the east coast, with up to 200 millimetres possible in isolated areas.

In the south-east, falls of between 40mm and 70mm are forecast, with isolated falls about 100mm in elevated areas.

Alex Melitsis, severe weather forecaster with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), said flash flooding would be the most dangerous aspect of the coming weather.

The BOM is also warning of damaging east to south-easterly winds along the east coast, with peak gusts up to 100km/h.

Very heavy surf may lead to damage and erosion and people are warned to stay away from the water on eastern beaches.

Justin Lawson, district support services with Tasmania Police, said in the first instance drivers should reconsider their need to travel.

"If you do have to drive, prepare in advance, take time."

He said easterly winds were likely to "bring down trees".

"That is an added risk factor for any road travel."
